Jonathon Simonetti - Back on the Bike

by Gabe Friedman
Jan 3, 2012 at 14:48

A hard crash on July 17th at Crankworx left Jonathon Simonetti with a broken back. He shattered one of his vertebrae and compressed another. This left him off of his bike for a few months. But finally, he has now reached his full recovery and is ready to bomb some trails and send some jumps. This is a video to show his progress and to let you all know that Jonathon Simonetti is back, so watch out!

I've got spacers between my T5-6 VB and I had to eventualy have a diskectomy of the T5-6 (several old injuries, one big one and being a Firefighter/Paramedic for years finaly took it's toll)...Back/neck injuries are absolutely awfull, I don't wish them on the worst of folks... Super glad to hear Jonothan is doing well and back to riding. It could have easily gone the other way. Awesome to see him back on the bike aye... Keep up the good work mate.

Yeah, spent the whole time in the halo waiting for the day I'd be able to get back on my bike again. Seeing the likes of Dan Atherton get through it was a massive inspiration to me, and made me realise it's possible. I'm really glad to see your riding again and getting fast. It's such a great feeling being able to do what you love, I certainly don't take it for granted like I used to.

Stories like this make all the bitching and moaning I have to hear from my friends about not being able to ride because of a sore arm or leg cramp from sleeping funny seem all the more stupid. Next time I hear a complaint, I'll point them to this vid. Congrats on your speedy recovery.

Really bad, I'm lucky to be alive.. Now I can't complain, my ribs are quite ok, my lungs are ok, my spleen..well I don't know but it's not my problem anymore ahah The only problem is about my vertebrae, they require more time to recover completely but in a week or 2 they should be ok. I want to be sure to be fully recovered before being back on bike and I know it will take some months but I think that it will be worth the wait
Thanks mate! Smile
p.s. I don't know if it's all correct in english but I hope you can understand

Congrats on the recovery, cheers Salute

Just hope it wont leave a scar in your riding haha i'm back on the bike in a week and a half (yes i'm counting) and can't wait but just worried about how it's all gonna feel at the top of a track and how much it might of effected my riding and confidence? anyone with a broken back got any feedback back from their recovery?

Man the first three months are painful! i broke my back in four as well, broke back buddys on that one Wink, anyway i got the full Monty and has a complete upper body brace on for 3 months which was awful! no showers, no exercise, minimal socializing. I was just sat at home hearing about what a good time every on was having :'(. I'm nearly finished my fifth month now and after days spend in the pool it's nearly bike time as well!

I was allowed to walk out of the hospital just a week later, after 3 months I was back on the bike. I always wonder how you can break something in very similiar ways but get such different ways of having it heal. Where did you break yours?
  • + 1
flag geesbikes (Jan 5, 2012 at 8:56)
T3, T4, T5, T6 and something else happened to T7 but i can't remember what it was haha, and yeah it is strange, i was bed ridden for 2 weeks which sucked and after that my full body brace came, like Simonettis brace my'n had to cover my neck as well :/ sucked, after my brace came off the 3 months later i nearly flipping fell over because my head felt so heavy! Anyway as i'm back on the bike in two weeks i was just wondering like did it affect your ridding in anyway? i mean like confidence and how much it slowed you down haha

flag c-bernier (Jan 5, 2012 at 15:48)
Not at all I literally went straight from the check up X-rays to riding the exact same jump I broke my back on. I have ADHD though so I tend not to think about stuff and just do it,injuries will affect everyone's confidence in different ways. Take it easy for the first bit though,a year and a half later and my back still hurts everyday because I went into things full bore right away!

flag jmsxtreem (Jan 3, 2012 at 17:05)
Yea I had a Leatt on and that's actually what caused it
  • + 1
flag tdoyle1995 (Jan 3, 2012 at 17:11)
so you would say dont use leatt? and how was it caused by the brace?
  • + 1
flag andrewgrant (Jan 3, 2012 at 17:13)
Leatt's will help prevent certain spinal injuries, but it doesn't come close to protecting from every kind of spinal injury. They actually make some worse

flag shredstatus (Jan 3, 2012 at 17:13)
The piece that goes down on the back was what dug into his back and shattered the bone. He now wears an alpinestars neck brace which prevents that from happening.
  • + 1
flag DBomberMan (Jan 3, 2012 at 17:14)
Do you think it would of been worse had you not been wearing the Leatt? Great edit and great to see u back and shreddin btw.
  • + 3
flag jmsxtreem (Jan 3, 2012 at 17:17)
The Leatt saved my neck which had it broken would've been way worse so forsure wear a neck brace. I just switched to the alpinestars one because the piece on the back snaps if u land on it hard enough

flag jo-m (Jan 4, 2012 at 10:14)
I think the newer Leatt's have that feature. Isn't that what the Thoracic Strut does?
  • + 1
flag jmsxtreem (Jan 4, 2012 at 15:18)
The newer ones might have it. But yea what broke my back was the thoracic strut. Right where the bone was shattered was right where it ends and the other vertabrae compressed from the impact
